First Muslim Jurists Congress Concludes in Kuala Lumpur

According to IQNA, the inaugural Muslim Jurists Congress, titled “Teaching Islamic Fiqh and Training Jurists: Characteristics and Criteria,” concluded on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event was organized by the Union of the Islamic World through its Academy of Islamic Jurisprudence and brought together Malaysian officials, Saudi representatives, and jurists from multiple Muslim countries.
The congress highlighted the importance of specialized fiqh education and the role of scholars in promoting unity across Islamic schools of thought. Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh noted the need for modernized teaching methods, while Dr. Mohammed Al Issa, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, emphasized fiqh’s practical role in guiding Islamic life. Sheikh Saleh Al Humaid, Khatib of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, described fiqh as a living science capable of evolving to address contemporary challenges. The Malaysian Federal Mufti stressed the importance of collective ijtihad in response to modern issues, including technological developments.
The congress concluded with a final communiqué proposing that the event become periodic to strengthen dialogue among Muslim jurists and adapt fiqh education to contemporary needs.
