Cardinal Calls for Peace During Interreligious Summit in Malaysia

At a recent interreligious summit in Malaysia, Vatican Cardinal George Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, delivered a powerful message that religious leaders must promote peace and never incite hatred or justify violence, Catholic Culture reported.

During his address at the Second International Summit of Religious Leaders, organized by Malaysia’s prime minister and the Muslim World League, Cardinal Koovakad emphasized that the true calling of religious leaders is to prevent evil, resolve disputes, and heal divisions. He urged leaders to always encourage nonviolent solutions to conflicts.

The cardinal also called for an honest acknowledgment that within all religious traditions, there are individuals and groups who have, in the name of religion, sown division and committed violence. He noted that they often distort scripture, tradition, and history to justify their actions and deprive others of their legitimate rights, including religious freedom.

Islam is the official religion of the Southeast Asian nation.

It should be mentioned that the teachings of Islam derived from the Holy Quran and Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) encourage religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence with people of all faiths.
