94 Journalists killed globally in 2023, says journalists’ rights group
The International Federation of Journalists has announced that at least 94 journalists and media workers, including 9 female journalists, have been killed worldwide in 2023.
According to the leading organization representing journalists worldwide, 72% of these journalists were killed in the Gaza war alone.
In the latest incident, Al Jazeera confirmed on Friday, December 15, that one of its cameramen was killed and one of its reporters was injured in southern Gaza.
The journalists’ rights group also added that seven journalists were killed in Asia, including two journalists in Afghanistan, two in the Philippines and one journalist in India, China and Bangladesh.
The federation also reported that 393 journalists and media workers are currently behind bars.
According to this federation, China and Hong Kong stand at the top of the list of worst countries for media workers with 80 imprisoned journalists.
