Ethnic clashes over tribal status kills at least 30 in Manipur, India

At least 30 people have been killed in ethnic clashes in the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur, officials say.

The violence broke out earlier this week when indigenous tribes protested against moves to grant tribal status to the Meiteis, promising them access to forest lands.

Other ethnic groups fear that the Meiteis may now occupy the forest dwellings they have inherited for generations.

The Indian army has dispatched thousands of troops to control the situation, with curfew in place and internet cut off.

However, the ruling Hindu-nationalist Government has been accused of not doing enough to prevent the violence.
