The Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program, David Beasley, described the situation in Syria as “a disaster on top of a disaster,” after the devastating earthquake left thousands of people dead and destroyed homes and building.
Beasley stressed the need for food aid to reach the people of northwestern Syria from all sides through all routes and without any restrictions, calling at the same time on all parties to facilitate humanitarian access, saying that the program’s activities throughout Syria require funds amounting to 300 million dollars to support 5.5 million people.
