UN official warns of a danger to half of the Afghan people
The United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan, Ramiz Alakbarov, has warned of severe food shortages in the country if sufficient resources are not provided to the Afghan people immediately.
Alakbarov said in a statement, “We are working to avoid a major crisis, but everything is possible if resources are not available,” pointing out that the local production of food and agriculture in Afghanistan is sufficient to feed only half of the population, and the rest of the population faces malnutrition and food shortages that can lead to famine or mass exodus to neighboring countries.
He warned that “half of the Afghan people suffer from severe malnutrition.”
He continued, “In the past four years, the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has been complex and will remain so. The country was subjected to a severe drought, and this humanitarian crisis was covered up because of the conflict that existed there, especially in the first half of the year.”
