The British Independent newspaper accused Prime Minister Boris Johnson of insulting British Muslims after failing to respond to their concerns about the spread of Islamophobia more than a year ago.
According to a report by Lizzie Dearden, MP Afzal Khan said Johnson’s failure to answer questions about Islamophobia put to him a year ago was an “insult to Muslims”, and Khan raised a point of order in Parliament last Monday, saying Johnson “ignored” the message on Islamophobia Awareness Month in November 2020.
Khan told the House of Commons, “At this time last year I wrote to the Prime Minister expressing concern about Islamophobia asking him to ensure the protection of Muslims and to fulfill his promise to conduct an independent investigation within his party and a year has passed and the Prime Minister has yet to respond, which is absolutely unacceptable and an insult to British Muslims.”
Khan urged Johnson to issue a statement this year for Islamophobia Awareness Month.
Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, said questions from MPs should have a “timely” answer.
He explained, “I expect the Prime Minister to respond to members from all parties in Parliament, and for this there are ministers.”
