The city of Peel, Toronto, witnessed the addition of the subject “Issues related to Islamophobia and how to combat it” to the educational curricula for teachers.
The plan was approved at the Peel District School Board meeting and includes mandatory anti-Islamophobia education for all district school board members.
According to officials, the plan will help make schools safer for Muslim staff and students.
This strategy is a step in the right direction but requires the participation of community members and the board of directors, said Asiyah Khan, Director of Educational Programs at the National Council of Muslims of Canada (NCCM).
“We hope that this strategy will be the first step in the fight against Islamophobia, and it is necessary to ensure that all students feel involved in this project,” she added.
It is worth mentioning that the Peel District Schools Board of Directors in Toronto, the capital of the Canadian province of Ontario, consists of 230 schools.
