CAIR Condemns Trump’s Mockery of Name Muhammad, Vows Continued Muslim Participation in Public Life

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a leading American Muslim civil rights organization, has criticized US President Donald Trump for mocking the popularity of the name Muhammad, saying such remarks would not deter Muslims from practicing their faith or participating in public life.

In a statement issued Saturday, CAIR described what it called the growing focus on American Muslims by Trump and other right-wing politicians as a sign of “political desperation and deep insecurity.”

Trump reportedly made the remarks at a rally in Dalton, Georgia, joking that guessing “Muhammad” when identifying Middle Eastern names would be correct around 65 percent of the time.

CAIR accused anti-Muslim political groups of exploiting Islamophobia to marginalize Muslim Americans and distract public attention from issues such as inflation and the cost of living. The organization also warned that anti-Muslim rhetoric could contribute to an environment in which violence against Muslim communities becomes more likely.

The group said American Muslims would continue to contribute to society as professionals, entrepreneurs and public officials, while practicing their religion and advocating for justice. It also emphasized the enduring cultural significance of Muhammad Ali and the respect accorded to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family) in American public life.

CAIR’s latest civil rights report recorded 8,683 complaints involving anti-Muslim bias in 2025, the highest annual total in the organization’s reporting history, which began in 1996.

The organization reiterated that criticism and mockery directed at Muslim names and identity would not prevent Muslim Americans from exercising their religious freedoms or participating in the country’s civic and political life.
