Afghanistan: Shia Teachers Face Growing Economic Hardship
———————————————
Shia teachers in Afghanistan have raised concerns over worsening economic conditions, saying low salaries and limited institutional support are making it increasingly difficult to provide quality education.
The concerns were voiced ahead of Afghanistan’s Teachers’ Day on October 5, which coincides with World Teachers’ Day. The occasion comes as Afghanistan continues to face a severe education crisis, with millions of girls still barred from secondary and higher education and schools and teachers struggling with significant financial challenges.
Most teachers in Afghanistan reportedly earn between 7,000 and 9,000 Afghanis ($100–130) per month, while salaries at private schools are often considerably lower.
The report noted that several programs were announced under Afghanistan’s previous government to provide teachers with land and housing, but the initiatives were not implemented.
Many teachers are now among the economically vulnerable groups in Afghan society
