Uyghurs Protest China’s Xinjiang Policies in Istanbul on National Day

Uyghur Muslims and supporters of their cause held a protest outside the Chinese Consulate in Istanbul, calling for protection of religious and cultural rights in Xinjiang.
The demonstration took place on 1 October, coinciding with China’s National Day, following a call by the World Uyghur Congress for protests in Istanbul and Berlin to highlight concerns over the situation of Uyghurs and other communities in China’s Xinjiang region.
Protesters gathered in Istanbul’s Sarıyer district carrying banners calling for an end to what they described as restrictions on Uyghur identity, religion and culture. Participants used the term “East Turkestan” for Xinjiang, a name commonly used by some Uyghur activists and organizations.
The rally included statements urging the international community to address allegations of human rights violations, including restrictions on religious practices and cultural freedoms.
The protests came amid continued international debate over China’s policies in Xinjiang. The Chinese government rejects allegations of systematic abuses, forced assimilation or genocide, saying its measures in the region are aimed at combating terrorism, extremism and separatism while maintaining security and stability.
