Yemen Displacement Crisis Deepens as Number of Displaced Reaches 180,000

A report by the Mokha Center for Strategic Studies has warned that renewed fighting in western Yemen is triggering repeated displacement and placing growing pressure on host communities and essential services.
The center’s report, covering September 1–16, 2026, cited data from Yemen’s Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps, which recorded 131,761 displaced people from 19,417 families across eight governorates during that period. Taiz received the largest number, followed by Lahj.
Later updates from the Executive Unit put the number of displaced people at 180,513 from 27,413 families across 10 governorates as of September 23, indicating that the figure in the report reflected an earlier stage of the displacement wave.
The report said repeated displacement has left some families without homes, livelihoods or remaining possessions, while the arrival of displaced people in Taiz, Lahj, Aden and Abyan has increased pressure on food, water, shelter and healthcare services.
The crisis has also affected education. UNICEF reported that 243 schools had been closed or suspended, affecting more than 137,000 students. The report called for faster humanitarian assistance, support for host communities and restoration of essential services, warning that prolonged fighting and limited aid access could turn displacement into a long-term crisis.
