At least 68 people have died in floods, landslides and other rain-related incidents in India and Nepal in recent days, with several others missing.

Indian authorities said Sunday that 56 people had died over three days in Uttar Pradesh after exceptionally heavy rainfall triggered landslides and flooding. More than 1,000 homes were damaged, while crops were also affected.

Uttar Pradesh recorded about 66.5 millimeters of rain between Friday and Sunday, compared with a seasonal average of 7.6 millimeters. Authorities attributed the unusually heavy rainfall to a low-pressure system that moved inland from the Bay of Bengal.

In neighboring Odisha, more than 70,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas after rivers overflowed following heavy rains.

Nepal’s National Disaster Management Authority reported 12 deaths since Thursday from floods and landslides, with seven people still missing. Search and rescue operations were continuing.

Separately, at least 10 Nepalese climbers and guides were reported missing at the base camp of Mount Himlung near Tibet after an avalanche struck early Sunday.

The disasters come amid growing concerns over increasingly severe extreme weather events across South Asia, with rising temperatures and climate change linked to greater weather-related risks.
