Hundreds of people remain gathered inside and outside the historic Shahi Masjid in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, as a dispute continues over a planned partial demolition linked to a road-widening project ahead of the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh festival.

Local residents said the crowd increased after bulldozers were positioned near the mosque, prompting continued protests and a vigil by members of the Muslim community. The planned work involves parts of the mosque complex, including a section of the prayer hall and a minaret.

Authorities say the road expansion project aims to improve access for pilgrims near the Mahakaleshwar Temple and will affect several structures along the route. The Madhya Pradesh High Court recently rejected petitions challenging the demolition notices, while mosque representatives have indicated they will seek further legal review.
