Hazara Community Marks Genocide Remembrance Day in Munich, Calls for Justice

Members of Afghanistan’s Hazara community and German officials, academics, and civil society activists gathered in Munich to commemorate the International Day of Genocide Remembrance and call for justice, recognition, and protection of human rights.

Organized by the Hazara Cultural Center in Munich, the event honored victims of violence against Hazaras and highlighted the need to preserve their memory and promote equality among Afghanistan’s ethnic communities.

Speakers stressed that addressing historical persecution is essential for peace and reconciliation, while a research project presented at the event examined Hazara identity and integration in Germany.

Participants also viewed the documentary Recess, which focuses on the 2018 attack on Kabul’s Kaj Educational Center that killed dozens of Hazara students. Human rights groups have documented repeated attacks against Hazaras in Afghanistan and called for stronger accountability and protection for vulnerable communities.
