Amnesty International Calls for Abolition of US Immigration Agency, Citing Human Rights Concerns

Amnesty International has called for the dissolution of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, accusing it of widespread human rights violations during immigration enforcement operations and urging the creation of a new system based on accountability and international standards.

In a report titled “We Had Whistles, They Had Guns,” the rights group said ICE suffers from what it described as a “fundamental flaw that cannot be repaired.” The report was based on more than 150 testimonies collected between March and June from four US cities where federal immigration enforcement activities had increased.

Amnesty’s US director, Nadia Daar, criticized the use of armed and masked federal agents and alleged a lack of accountability during operations, arguing that current practices do not improve community safety.

The report accused the Trump administration of implementing what it called a system of “mass detention and deportation,” and linked immigration policies to rhetoric described by the organization as xenophobic and discriminatory. These assessments reflect Amnesty’s position; ICE and the Department of Homeland Security had not issued an immediate response to the allegations cited in the report.

The report comes amid growing debate in the United States over immigration enforcement methods, the use of force, and the treatment of migrants and asylum seekers.
