International experts and legal specialists are calling for an impartial investigation into allegations that chemical weapons were used during Sudan’s ongoing conflict, saying evidence must be independently examined before any party is held responsible.

The calls for an investigation intensified after claims emerged that chemical agents may have been used during fighting at the al-Jaili oil refinery, north of Khartoum, in September 2024. Experts reviewing available videos, images and other materials said the evidence showed indications of possible chemical substance use, but stressed that the findings remain inconclusive.

According to reports, specialists said that the lack of direct access to the site, the time that has passed since the incident, and the possible loss or destruction of evidence have made it impossible to determine with certainty the type of substance involved or identify those responsible.

Legal experts warned against assigning blame before a professional investigation is completed, emphasizing that international inspectors should visit the location, collect samples and conduct laboratory testing in accredited facilities to establish the facts.

The renewed demands for an investigation followed allegations by the United States government that Sudanese authorities used chemical weapons during battles in 2024. The claim led Washington to impose additional sanctions on Sudan in July 2026. Sudanese officials have rejected the accusations as false and said the country remains committed to international law.

Human rights observers have said that only an independent investigation under international supervision can clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and prevent misinformation or politically driven conclusions.

Aid organizations have also warned that the continuation of the war, combined with uncertainty over the allegations, is complicating humanitarian operations and increasing challenges for civilians affected by the conflict. They stressed that protecting available evidence and ensuring a transparent investigation are essential steps toward accountability.
