Taliban Dissolve Afghanistan’s Shia High Council, Seize Membership Cards of 25 Members in Kabul

The Taliban’s Ministry of Justice has dissolved the High Council of Shia Muslims of Afghanistan and halted its activities after summoning members of the organization and confiscating the membership cards of 25 individuals.

According to Etilaat Roz, the move came after members of the council were called in under the pretext of discussing the release of the organization’s chairman. Sources said that Mohammad Ali Elaqai, the head of the council, remains in detention and has reportedly been asked to transfer ownership of his private property.

The Taliban’s Minister of Justice, Abdul Hakim Shara’i, described the council as an unnecessary structure. The organization had previously operated as a channel of communication between the Taliban authorities and Afghanistan’s Shia community.

The decision follows earlier reports of restrictions placed on the council’s activities and has raised concerns among members of Afghanistan’s Shia community regarding the future of their representation and institutional activities.
