UN General Assembly opens amid wars, AI concerns and global governance challenges

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly has opened in New York, bringing together nearly 130 world leaders to discuss major international challenges, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, economic instability and the growing need for global rules on artificial intelligence.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged stronger international cooperation on AI safety, warning that countries need common safeguards to prevent uncontrolled technological competition.

The gathering also takes place amid concerns over the UN’s financial pressures, institutional challenges and ability to respond effectively to global crises. Discussions are expected to focus on diplomacy, security, humanitarian issues and reforms aimed at strengthening international cooperation.
