U.S. Sanctions Target Iranian Airlines, Adding Pressure on the Country’s Aviation Sector

The United States has imposed new sanctions on Iran’s aviation sector, targeting 27 Iranian airlines and several related entities, a move that has increased pressure on the country’s international air connectivity.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced on September 8, 2026, that its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned 36 entities and individuals linked to Iran’s aviation industry. The measures included designations against 27 Iranian airlines, as well as foreign intermediaries and companies accused by Washington of supporting Iran’s aviation networks.

Following the sanctions, some Iranian airlines faced operational difficulties on international routes. Mahan Air, which had already been under U.S. sanctions, suspended flights to Istanbul, Ankara and Muscat after additional restrictions affected its operations and related service networks.

The latest measures come amid broader U.S. efforts to restrict Iran’s access to international aviation services, aircraft-related technology and financial networks. Washington says the sanctions are aimed at preventing the use of aviation channels for activities it considers linked to military and security operations.

Iran’s aviation industry has faced long-standing challenges due to international sanctions, limited access to aircraft parts and difficulties maintaining and renewing its fleet. Analysts have warned that additional restrictions could further complicate international travel and aviation operations.

The impact of the new sanctions on all Iranian carriers and regional flight routes is expected to depend on how foreign governments, airports and aviation service providers respond to the measures.
