Global Water Crisis Deepens as Solar Desalination, AI Emerge as Potential Solutions

The global water shortage is intensifying, prompting governments and researchers to explore new technologies, including solar-powered desalination and artificial intelligence, as part of broader efforts to address growing pressure on freshwater resources.

A joint report by the World Health Organization and UNICEF in 2025 found that around 2.1 billion people worldwide still lack access to safely managed drinking water. Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) also indicates a continued decline in renewable water availability per capita, while agriculture remains the largest consumer of freshwater resources.

The crisis is particularly severe in North Africa and West Asia. Iraq is among the countries facing major water challenges due to declining flows in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, reduced rainfall, and shrinking water reserves, affecting agricultural plans as well as environmental and social conditions.

In response, attention is increasingly turning to advanced desalination technologies. Researchers have been developing solar-powered systems capable of converting seawater into drinking water while seeking ways to reduce the environmental impact of concentrated brine produced by traditional desalination processes.

Meanwhile, reverse osmosis technology is undergoing improvements through more efficient membranes and energy recovery systems. Artificial intelligence is also being integrated into desalination facilities to analyze operational data, optimize performance, reduce energy consumption, and lower production costs.

Market estimates indicate that the global water desalination industry reached around $21.5 billion in 2025 and could grow to nearly $36.7 billion by 2030, driven by rising water scarcity and increasing demand for alternative water sources.
