Assam Flood Death Toll Rises to 97 as More Than 168,000 People Remain Affected

The flood situation in India’s Assam state remains severe, with the death toll rising to 97 and more than 168,000 people still affected across 15 districts, according to local officials.

Golaghat has emerged as the worst-hit district, with around 54,000 people impacted, followed by Sivasagar and Jorhat. Floodwaters have also damaged agricultural land, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure in several areas.

Authorities said 133 relief camps and distribution centres are currently operating in six districts, providing shelter and assistance to approximately 45,000 displaced residents. More than 14,000 hectares of farmland remain submerged due to the flooding.

Meanwhile, railway connectivity in Sivasagar district has been restored after being disrupted for nearly two weeks due to flood-related damage to tracks. The Northeast Frontier Railway resumed operations on the Selenghat-Amguri-Simaluguri-Sivasagar Town section, allowing limited train services between Guwahati and Dibrugarh.

Officials said initial train operations will rely on diesel locomotives as a safety measure, after many displaced residents, including families and livestock, took shelter near railway tracks. Additional and diverted train services are also being operated to maintain connectivity with affected parts of Upper Assam.
