Report Warns Social Media Platforms Are Amplifying Anti-Muslim Hate in Ireland

A new report in Ireland has raised concerns over the role of social media platforms in spreading hate speech and incitement to violence targeting Muslims, warning that online algorithms can significantly amplify Islamophobic content.

The study, titled Breaking Views and published by civil society organization Hope and Courage Collective, examined online reactions following the attack and arson incident at the Al Madina prayer hall in Dublin. According to the report, a video posted on Facebook after the incident was viewed nearly 1.9 million times, around 352 times higher than the account’s usual reach.

Researchers analyzed more than 10,000 comments and reactions linked to the incident, finding that about one-fifth contained anti-Muslim hate speech, expressed support for the attack, or called for further attacks on mosques.

The report also examined discussions on the platform X, where the topic generated more than 112,000 posts from around 70,000 accounts within six days, reaching an estimated 243 million users. Nearly 90 percent of the posts originated outside Ireland, highlighting the international spread of anti-Muslim narratives.

Researcher Mark Malone said the findings demonstrate how recommendation algorithms can turn acts of violence against religious sites into viral content, potentially increasing social tensions.

The report called on social media companies to strengthen enforcement of their own policies and urged Irish authorities to engage with Meta to assess the risks associated with the case.
