Heavy rains and a sudden landslide in Ethiopia’s Amhara region have caused a deadly incident at a religious site, killing and injuring a number of Christian pilgrims attending a traditional ceremony.

The incident occurred at a historic monastery where hundreds of followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church had gathered to participate in the traditional “Holy Water” ritual, a ceremony associated with prayers for healing and blessings. According to reports, large rocks and debris fell from the surrounding mountain slope, striking those who were present.

At least 14 Christian pilgrims were killed and seven others were seriously injured in the incident, according to local reports. Several people are also believed to remain missing, prompting continued search and rescue operations in the area.

Authorities and emergency teams are continuing efforts to locate survivors and recover those affected by the landslide, as the religious community mourns the loss of pilgrims during one of the region’s significant traditional gatherings.
