At least 14 people were killed and 26 others injured in a suicide bombing targeting a peace rally in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to local authorities.

The attack took place near the Kabal police station in Swat district as participants in a rally organized by the Swat Peace Council, a local tribal body, marched to call for improved security and lasting stability in the region.

Security officials said the attacker attempted to enter the police station but was stopped by security personnel at the outer gate. The suspect then detonated an explosives vest, causing casualties among rally participants and civilians nearby.

Emergency responders transported the injured to local hospitals, while security forces sealed off the area and launched an investigation into the incident.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, extended condolences to the families of the victims, and wished those injured a swift recovery. Both leaders reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating terrorism and strengthening national security.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, security officials said armed militant groups active in the region are suspected, citing a pattern of attacks targeting security personnel and civilians in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Bordering Afghanistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has experienced recurring militant violence and remains one of Pakistan’s most security-sensitive regions.
