Gaza Authorities Report Recovery of 112 Bodies from Rubble in Gaza City

Gaza’s civil defense agency said Saturday that rescue teams had recovered the remains of 112 people from collapsed buildings in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City after nearly two weeks of search operations.

The agency said the recovery effort lasted 136 hours and was carried out largely by hand due to limited equipment. The remains included 40 children, 38 women, and seven people with disabilities, according to Gaza authorities.

Civil defense officials said another 157 bodies are believed to remain buried beneath the rubble at the site, with teams continuing efforts to recover them amid difficult conditions involving destroyed concrete and twisted metal.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it supported the operation, describing the recovery of missing persons and human remains as a critical humanitarian issue for families seeking to bury their relatives with dignity.

Thousands of people are still reported missing across Gaza, many believed to be trapped under debris from Israeli air strikes during the ongoing conflict. Gaza’s Health Ministry has reported more than 73,300 deaths since the war began in October 2023, a figure the United Nations considers reliable.
