At least 30 people have allegedly been killed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir during a security crackdown on protests, according to a local civil rights group, which accused authorities of using force against unarmed demonstrators.

The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) said security forces killed 25 protesters on Monday and five more on Tuesday during demonstrations calling for political and electoral reforms in the disputed region.

The unrest, which began in June, has been accompanied by mass arrests and a communications blackout that has restricted internet and mobile access, making independent verification of events difficult. Rights groups have called for the restoration of communications and an investigation into the reported deaths.

The protests have focused on demands for greater political representation and the removal of reserved parliamentary seats for refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir, which critics say allow outside influence over regional affairs.
