Amnesty Calls on US to Arrest Netanyahu Over ICC Warrant

Amnesty International has urged US authorities to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and transfer him to the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he faces an active arrest warrant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

Amnesty’s US office called on Washington to uphold international law while Netanyahu was visiting the capital for talks with President Donald Trump. Trump welcomed Netanyahu and said the meeting had gone “very well,” while previously stating that Netanyahu would not be arrested in the United States.

The ICC issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged crimes in Gaza. Israel has rejected the allegations and challenged the court’s authority.

Although the US and Israel are not members of the ICC, the court’s member states are required to cooperate with its legal decisions, including enforcing arrest warrants against individuals entering their territory.

The warrant remains active and continues to be a source of international legal and political debate, with human rights groups calling for accountability, while Israel and its allies reject the ICC’s jurisdiction.
