Zainabiyah Women Play a Major Role in Serving Arbaeen Pilgrims and Preserving Hussaini Rituals

Women devoted to Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) continue to play an active role in commemorating Hussaini rituals and serving pilgrims of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), reflecting their devotion to the example of Lady Zaynab al-Kubra (peace be upon her) and the enduring role of women in preserving the memory of the tragedy of Karbala and supporting the message of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).

This participation is particularly visible during the Ashura and Arbaeen pilgrimages, mourning ceremonies, and other religious occasions, where women contribute by organizing mourning gatherings and religious programs, while also taking part in various service activities dedicated to pilgrims.

As millions of pilgrims continue their journey toward the holy city of Karbala, Iraqi women of different ages — including elderly women, young women, and girls — are actively involved in preparing food and beverages at Hussaini service stations and homes. They also help wash pilgrims’ clothes, prepare rest areas, and provide essential support for those walking along the routes leading to the shrine of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him).

Many women also dedicate their personal resources to organizing mourning ceremonies, supporting service caravans, and purchasing supplies needed to assist pilgrims, highlighting the values of generosity, sacrifice, and social solidarity associated with the Arbaeen season. Researchers and scholars of the Hussaini movement have emphasized that women’s participation in these rituals has preserved its unique identity and character across generations.
