Sinjar Residents Set Out on Foot Toward Karbala to Mark Arbaeen

Groups of residents from Sinjar District in Nineveh Province have embarked on a walking journey toward the holy city of Karbala to participate in the Arbaeen pilgrimage of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), covering a distance of nearly 600 kilometers through roads, valleys, and desert areas.

During their journey, the participants carried Hussein flags, recalling the tragic events of the Battle of Karbala on the 10th of Muharram in 61 AH, and the subsequent captivity and journey of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, his family, and his companions (peace be upon them).

The participants are keen to follow routes that evoke the memory of the journey of the captives of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) toward Syria, as a symbolic expression of their sympathy and renewal of their connection to the cause of Imam Hussein, despite the hardships of the road, high temperatures, and long distances.

The procession continues for several days, as pilgrims pass through various areas before reaching the holy city of Karbala. Along the way, Hussein mourning processions and local residents welcome them, providing food, water, resting places, and other essential services.

The participants affirm that the long distance and difficult journey have not prevented them from continuing their path toward the shrine of the Master of Martyrs, Imam Hussein (peace be upon him). They consider walking to Karbala during Arbaeen an act of renewing their pledge of loyalty and devotion to Imam Hussein and his Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), while remembering their sacrifices and the tragedies they endured after the Battle of Karbala.
