A Muslim kiosk worker at a shopping mall in Utah was seriously injured after being attacked with a knife in what authorities are investigating as a possible hate-motivated crime.
The incident occurred at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, where the victim, identified in local reports as Sohail, was approached by the suspect, 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen. According to court documents cited by police, the suspect asked the victim about his name and religion before carrying out the stabbing.
Police said the victim suffered more than 15 stab wounds and was hospitalized with serious injuries. Bystanders intervened during the attack, restraining the suspect and removing the knife before officers arrived at the scene.
Authorities arrested Larsen on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a prohibited dangerous weapon. According to investigators, the suspect told police that he targeted the victim because of his religious beliefs and made statements indicating hostility toward Muslims.
The case remains under investigation, and prosecutors are reviewing potential charges. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the attack and called on public officials and community leaders to reject anti-Muslim hatred and rhetoric.
The incident has drawn renewed attention to concerns over religiously motivated violence and hate crimes targeting Muslim communities in the United States.
