Shia communities in several countries marked Ashura with mourning gatherings, processions, lectures and charitable activities, highlighting the global presence of Husseini rituals and the continued remembrance of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.

Ashura commemorations expanded this year across Nigeria and Niger, where mourning gatherings and Husseini events were held in more than 400 cities and towns, marking one of the widest Ashura observances in West Africa.

Programs were organized across several Nigerian states, including Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi and Lagos, as well as the capital Abuja. Events were also held in major cities in Niger, including Niamey, Maradi and Konni.

The ceremonies included mourning councils, religious lectures, intellectual seminars, elegies, Husseini poems, reenactments of scenes from Karbala, congregational prayers and food distribution. Speakers focused on the moral and humanitarian dimensions of Imam Hussein’s uprising, including sacrifice, justice, steadfastness and resistance to oppression.

In Lebanon, Ashura gatherings continued in the south, the Bekaa and Beirut’s southern suburbs despite ongoing Israeli attacks and repeated violations of Lebanese airspace by warplanes and drones. Husseiniyas, mosques and mourning tents witnessed wide participation, while black and red banners were raised in streets and public squares. Food was also distributed to the poor and needy in memory of the martyrs.

In the United States, Shia communities in Michigan prepared for Ashura through mourning gatherings, religious lectures and cultural programs at Islamic centers and Husseiniyas. Iraqi, Iranian, Lebanese and other communities participated, emphasizing the importance of passing Husseini values to younger generations in the diaspora.

In Canada, the Imam Shirazi World Center, in cooperation with the Iranian Islamic Center, held mourning ceremonies during the first ten nights of Muharram 1448 AH. The program included Quran recitation, Ziyarat Ashura, congregational prayers, speeches, elegies and lamentation gatherings.

In Bangladesh, a mourning ceremony for Hazrat Ali Akbar, peace be upon him, was held at the historic Husseini Dalan Imambara in Dhaka, where Urdu and Bengali speakers highlighted his courage, loyalty and sacrifice before the ceremony concluded with traditional mourning.
