Palestinian Shepherd Loses Sheep Ahead of Eid al-Adha in West Bank Settler Theft

A Palestinian shepherd in Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, says settlers stole around 45 of her sheep days before Eid al-Adha, depriving her family of both its holiday sacrifice and a vital source of income.

According to Reuters, CCTV footage verified by the agency showed masked men moving sheep from the farm at night. The theft reportedly took place before dawn on May 21, after the family’s guard dogs had also been stolen earlier.

The shepherd, Sameeha Rasheed, said the loss was especially severe because her family depended on the animals for income, including medical costs for her husband, who has cancer.

The Israeli military said troops were sent to the area but did not see settlers, adding that the case had been handed to Israeli police for investigation.

Palestinian officials say settler attacks on farmers and shepherds have increased since the Gaza war began in October 2023. The Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture reported that about 4,000 head of livestock have been stolen by settlers since the start of 2026, causing losses of more than $5 million.

The incident comes as Muslims prepare for Eid al-Adha, when many families sacrifice livestock and distribute meat to relatives and the poor.
