Historic U.S. Jury Verdict Holds Instagram, YouTube Liable for Youth Mental Health Harm

A Los Angeles jury has issued a landmark civil verdict against Meta (Instagram) and Google (YouTube), finding the companies negligent for designing platforms that contributed to serious mental health issues in a young user.

The case, brought by a woman identified as K.G.M., alleged that prolonged use of Instagram from age 9 and YouTube from age 6 caused anxiety, depression, and other psychological harms. The jury concluded that the companies’ design features, including endless scrolling and other addictive mechanisms, encouraged excessive use, particularly among minors.

The court awarded $6 million in damages, assigning 70% responsibility to Meta and 30% to Google. Both companies have denied wrongdoing and announced plans to appeal the decision.

Legal experts describe the ruling as historic, marking one of the first instances in the United States where social media platforms were held civilly liable for design-induced addiction. Observers warn the verdict could influence hundreds of similar lawsuits nationwide and prompt stricter regulations governing social media platforms.

The case highlights growing global concern over the mental health impacts of social media on young users and the responsibility of technology companies to mitigate potential harms.
