Chaldean Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako Announces Resignation
——————————–
Louis Raphael Sako, head of the Chaldean Catholic Church, announced on Tuesday that he has submitted his resignation from the leadership of the church, stating that the decision has been accepted by Pope Leo XIV.

In a statement, Sako said he had been considering stepping down for two years after reaching the age of 75. He noted that he had previously discussed the matter with the late Pope Francis, who had encouraged him to remain in his position at the time.

Sako explained that on March 9, 2026, he decided to submit his resignation freely to Pope Leo XIV in order to devote himself to prayer, writing, and simple service. The resignation was accepted, and he requested that it be officially announced on March 10 to prevent speculation.

The patriarch emphasized that the decision was entirely voluntary and not requested by anyone.

Reflecting on his tenure, Sako said he led the Chaldean Church through extremely difficult circumstances and major challenges while preserving the unity of its institutions. He added that he consistently defended the rights of Iraqis and Christians both domestically and internationally.

Sako served as patriarch for 13 years, describing the period as one marked by pastoral care, dedication, and development within the church.
