UN Chief Warns Middle East Conflict Could Spiral Out of Control, Urges Immediate Ceasefire

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, warned on Friday that the escalating conflict in the Middle East risks spiraling out of control, amid rising regional tensions and exchanges of attacks involving multiple parties across the region.

In remarks addressing the growing crisis, Guterres condemned what he described as “unlawful attacks” taking place across the region. He stressed that such actions are causing severe humanitarian suffering and significant harm to civilians both within the Middle East and beyond.

The UN chief said the continuation of these attacks not only threatens civilian lives but also poses a serious risk to the global economy. He noted that the repercussions of escalating conflict could disproportionately affect the world’s most vulnerable populations, who are often the hardest hit by economic shocks and instability resulting from wars and crises.

Guterres also warned that the intensifying tensions could deteriorate to a point where the situation exceeds the control of any single party. Such a scenario, he said, would carry dangerous consequences for both regional and international peace and stability.

Calling for urgent action, the UN Secretary-General urged all sides involved in the conflict to halt hostilities immediately and shift toward serious diplomatic negotiations. He emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy remain essential to containing the crisis and preventing the conflict from widening further across the region.
