Deadly Landslides and Floods Disrupt Travel Across Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has halted passenger train services and closed several major roads as landslides and floods triggered by days of heavy rain have caused more than 30 deaths, Arab News reported. The Disaster Management Center said most fatalities were recorded in the central tea-growing districts of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, located about 300 kilometers east of Colombo.

At least 14 people remain missing after landslides swept through rural communities. Severe weather since last week has flooded homes, farmland and key transport routes. Overflowing reservoirs and rivers have worsened the situation, prompting authorities to shut down roads linking several provinces.

Train services in the central highlands were suspended after boulders, mud and uprooted trees blocked rail tracks. In some places, floodwaters also submerged the lines, forcing emergency crews to clear debris.

Local television footage showed navy teams transporting stranded residents and a vehicle being carried off by strong currents near Ampara in the east of the country. Officials estimate around 4,000 families have been affected as efforts continue to provide relief and monitor further risks.
