UK University Honored for Advancing Muslim Inclusion
………….
De Montfort University has received the Aziz Foundation Inclusion Award for 2025, in recognition of its expanding efforts to support Muslim students and strengthen inclusive practices across its campus. The award was presented during the foundation’s inaugural Social Impact Awards ceremony held at the British Library.
The Aziz Foundation, which promotes greater participation of British Muslims in higher education and public life, commended the university for adopting a comprehensive approach to inclusion. According to the foundation, De Montfort University has demonstrated a model of engagement that integrates Muslim students into academic and campus life without marginalization, while also respecting religious identity.
The university was recognized for a series of practical initiatives, including the development of new prayer facilities and the renovation of existing spaces in 2023 to improve accessibility. The updated facilities accommodate around 400 worshippers and feature hearing-assistance systems to ensure equal access for all students.
University Imam Muhammad Laher also received special acknowledgement for fostering a sense of spiritual and social belonging among Muslim students.
Staff members and academics were likewise praised for strengthening institutional partnerships with the Aziz Foundation and promoting a more supportive academic environment. The award coincides with the university’s plans to host the launch of a new research report examining the first-year experiences of Muslim students in the UK.
