At the upcoming meeting of the 183 member countries of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), independent experts have proposed a ban on the production and import of filtered cigarettes.

According to BBC News, cigarette filters, which often contain plastic, contribute billions of toxic cigarette butts to the environment each year. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also stated that filters provide no health benefits and has expressed support for their prohibition.
