British Council Launches AI Tool to Help English Learners Practice Speaking

The British Council has launched a new artificial intelligence-powered system to help English learners practice speaking and receive instant feedback, as reported by Arab News. The tool, named AiBC, is designed to complement traditional teaching methods rather than replace teachers, offering learners a flexible way to improve fluency and confidence outside the classroom.

Developed internally by the British Council’s language experts, AiBC uses simulated real-life conversations instead of multiple-choice questions to create a more authentic speaking experience. Learners can repeat exercises at their own pace, with the system providing downloadable reports featuring personalized feedback on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency.

The organization said AiBC aims to provide a “safe and judgment-free” space for practice, helping students reinforce what they learn in class. Described as a “human-first” approach, the platform keeps teachers central to the learning process while giving students additional speaking opportunities.

The launch follows British Council research showing that nearly 80 percent of UK teachers have adapted their assignments due to AI’s growing role in education. Operating in more than 100 countries, the British Council said AiBC reflects its goal of using technology to enhance — not automate — the English learning experience.
