Gaza Officials Report Torture Signs on Bodies Returned from Israeli Detention

At least 135 bodies of Palestinians returned by Israel to Gaza were previously held at the Sde Teiman detention centre, already under investigation for alleged torture and deaths in custody, according to Gaza’s health ministry, as reported by The Guardian.

Dr Munir al-Bursh, director general of the health ministry, said documents found inside the body bags identified Sde Teiman as the holding site and indicated DNA tests were conducted there. The facility, located in Israel’s Negev desert, has been accused of mistreating Palestinian detainees who were kept blindfolded, handcuffed and shackled to beds.

Doctors at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis said examinations revealed evidence of torture, executions, and crushing injuries consistent with tank tracks. Several bodies were reportedly blindfolded with hands tied, and some showed signs of point-blank gunfire.

Human rights groups, including Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHR), called for an independent international investigation, saying the findings corroborate earlier reports of systematic abuse and medical neglect at Sde Teiman.

Former detainees and Israeli medical staff have also described degrading treatment of Palestinian prisoners, including prolonged restraint, nudity, and denial of medical care. Israeli authorities have stated that all allegations of misconduct are reviewed and, when appropriate, investigated by military police.

Since October 2023, at least 75 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli custody, according to the United Nations, amid mounting international pressure for accountability over conditions inside Israel’s detention facilities.
