Flotilla Journalists Released Amid Warnings of Massive Explosive Threat in Gaza
—————————–
The release of journalists detained by Israel from a Gaza-bound flotilla has been confirmed, occurring simultaneously with urgent warnings about the immense threat posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO) left in Gaza, complicating the US-led ceasefire.
The press freedom group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) confirmed the release of the 14 journalists who were detained after Israeli forces intercepted the “Freedom Flotilla” vessel. The release of the media professionals was secured following diplomatic efforts, as reported by JURIST.
Amid the ceasefire that began on Friday, the safety of displaced people attempting to return home is severely compromised by massive amounts of UXO. The NGO Handicap International warned Tuesday that the risks are “enormous,” estimating that 70,000 tons of explosives have been dropped on Gaza since the start of the two-year war.
Anne-Claire Yaeesh, the organization’s director for the Palestinian territories, noted that the complexity of the densely populated urban environment aggravates the danger.
The UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) confirmed that requests for technical expertise have “surged” since the ceasefire. However, UNMAS has a limited operational capacity due to restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities, which have prevented the agency from obtaining authorization to bring in the necessary armored vehicles and demining equipment needed for large-scale operations. Initial efforts are focused on clearing key roads for the thousands of returning displaced people.
