Austria Expands Measures Against “Political Islam” Amid Controversy
………….

The Austrian government is advancing controversial measures targeting what it describes as “political Islam,” following debates over the ban on hijabs in certain school levels. Integration Minister Claudia Plakolm announced plans to create a “hate preacher registry” aimed at online accounts spreading extremist content or inciting violence.

Plakolm indicated the initiative may extend to individuals promoting early hijab-wearing for young girls, which authorities associate with radical agendas. The measure seeks to curb the influence of extremist preachers online, particularly on youth and minors. Accounts promoting extremism or practices seen as conflicting with democratic values would be blocked.

Observers note that these steps are part of a broader government strategy to restrict certain Islamic organizations and groups. Critics warn that, despite the security rationale, the measures could spark debates over freedom of expression and the rights of Muslims, especially when religious practices, such as wearing the hijab, become linked to extremist narratives.
