Iraqi officials claim senior Daesh leader killed in Syria

The Iraqi counterterrorism service announced on Friday that a senior Daesh leader was killed during a security operation in Syria, conducted in coordination with the US-led international coalition, Arab News reported.
The commander, Omar Abdul Qader Bassam, also known as “Abdul Rahman Al-Halabi,” served as the group’s head of external operations and security, the service reported.
He was responsible for orchestrating attacks in several countries, including the bombing of Iran’s embassy in Lebanon, and was involved in planning additional operations in Europe and the United States that were ultimately prevented through intelligence efforts.
The US Central Command has carried out multiple strikes targeting Daesh leaders in Syria. US officials have cautioned that the group aims to regain strength in the country following the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad last December.
