Sweden to Ban Mobile Phones in Schools Nationwide from 2026
………..
Sweden will introduce a nationwide ban on mobile phones in all schools from the 2026 academic year, The Guardian reports, aiming to enhance security and improve learning conditions for students. Under the new rules, schools and after-school clubs must collect students’ phones at the start of the day and return them only at dismissal. The policy will apply to children aged seven to 16.
Education Minister Simona Mohamsson described the move as part of “the biggest reform agenda in over 30 years,” alongside planned changes to the curriculum, grading system, and teacher training. The government has allocated 95 million kronor (£7.5m) for 2026 and 100 million kronor for 2027 to implement the measure.
Similar bans have been introduced in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and France, where research and pilot programs have shown improvements in classroom focus and learning outcomes. Mohamsson emphasized the policy is compulsory nationwide, with no exceptions.
