UN: Aid Convoy Reaches Syria’s Sweida via Highway After Weeks of Fighting

A United Nations-led aid convoy has reached Syria’s southern Sweida governorate via the Damascus–Sweida Highway 110 for the first time since July 12, following weeks of disruption caused by heavy clashes, Xinhua reported based on quoting the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The convoy, which arrived Thursday, involved the UN, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, and partner organizations. It consisted of 19 trucks carrying food baskets, hygiene kits, nutritional supplements, medical supplies, fuel, and solar lamps.

OCHA said that fighting in Sweida since mid-July has displaced more than 187,000 people across southern Syria, compounding humanitarian needs. Between July and August, nearly 370,000 people across Sweida, Daraa, and Rural Damascus governorates received humanitarian assistance.

Clashes between Druze factions and Bedouin tribes in early July had rendered the Damascus–Sweida highway unsafe, forcing aid groups to rely on indirect and more dangerous routes. A fragile ceasefire was brokered in late July, but the situation remains volatile.

The UN stressed that it will continue scaling up relief efforts to address the worsening crisis in southern Syria.
