Deadly Landslide Strikes Indian-Administered Kashmir: 33 Dead
————————
A massive landslide, triggered by heavy rains, has killed at least 33 people and injured over 20 near the Vaishno Devi shrine in the Jammu division of Indian-administered Kashmir, Anadolu Agency reported. The devastating incident occurred in the Katra city of the Reasi district, with officials confirming that at least 32 of the deaths were from this single event.
The landslide is part of a larger crisis caused by relentless rainfall, which has been the heaviest the region has seen in decades. Since Tuesday, at least 37 people have lost their lives across the Reasi and Doda districts due to rain-related incidents. The downpour has brought daily life to a standstill, forcing the closure of schools and businesses.
The Flood Control Department has issued a flood risk warning for the Jhelum River, advising residents to evacuate from low-lying areas. Authorities have already evacuated approximately 3,500 people to safer locations as damaged bridges and roads have complicated rescue and travel efforts. Indian Railways had to cancel 18 trains to and from major stations in the Jammu region, though some services have since been restored.
The severe weather also caused a significant communications blackout. Mobile and internet services were disrupted across the region after optical fiber cables were damaged in multiple locations. While services have been partially restored, repair work is still ongoing.
