Deadly Attack in Sudan’s Kordofan Region Highlights Escalating Civil War Crisis

In a devastating episode amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war, a rural village in the Kordofan region suffered one of the deadliest attacks since the conflict began in 2023, Arab News reported. Armed fighters, including paramilitary forces and allied militias, launched a violent assault on the community, killing at least 200 civilians — many of them women and children — and leaving the village largely deserted.

The attack unfolded in mid-July, when residents were awakened by gunfire and the roar of vehicles. Fighters stormed the village, indiscriminately firing and looting homes, with numerous accounts of sexual violence against women. Despite some villagers’ attempts to defend their homes, the attackers overwhelmed the community, burning houses and seizing valuables.

Satellite imagery confirmed widespread destruction consistent with intentional arson. Humanitarian organizations report that over 450 civilians were killed in the broader area during this two-day offensive. Survivors have fled the region, which has become a critical frontline in the struggle between Sudan’s military and the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Kordofan region is strategically significant due to its oil resources and vital supply routes. Control over this area has intensified the conflict, contributing to severe disruptions of basic services and supply chains. Residents in provincial capitals report shortages of essential goods, with many forced to travel long distances for basic necessities.

The humanitarian situation is dire, with widespread displacement, outbreaks of disease such as cholera, and alarming levels of malnutrition. Aid groups highlight the challenges of delivering assistance amid blockades and ongoing violence. In nearby Darfur, similar conditions prevail, with food prices soaring and civilians trapped under paramilitary control facing starvation and violence.
