Over 21 Million Pilgrims Attend 2025 Arbaeen in Iraq
——————————–
More than 21 million pilgrims attended the 2025 Arbaeen pilgrimage in Karbala, according to authorities at the al-Abbas Holy Shrine. The commemoration, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, marks the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Pilgrims traveled to Karbala from across Iraq and other countries, with some beginning their walk from as far as the southernmost point of Al-Faw. The pilgrimage, which honors Imam Hussein’s sacrifice in the Battle of Karbala, drew a massive crowd of Shia Muslims and people of other faiths, despite temperatures in Iraq soaring above 50 degrees Celsius (122°F).
Along the pilgrimage routes, volunteers set up “moukebs,” or service stations, to provide food, water, medical aid, and shelter to the millions of walkers. The event is not only a physical journey but also a spiritual expression of devotion and a symbol of unity.
