UN Security Council Dismisses announcement of parallel government by Sudan’s RSF

The UN Security Council has rejected the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) announcement of a parallel governing authority in Sudan, warning it threatens the country’s unity, territorial integrity, and regional stability, Anadolu Agency reported. The council expressed grave concern that this move could fragment Sudan and worsen its humanitarian crisis. It reaffirmed commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and called on the RSF to lift its siege of El Fasher and allow unhindered humanitarian access amid reports of renewed offensives and civilian casualties, including at least 57 killed in a recent RSF attack.

The council condemned attacks in Kordofan causing heavy civilian losses and disruption to aid. It stressed the urgent need for dialogue to halt fighting, secure a ceasefire, and achieve a political settlement involving all Sudanese actors. All parties were urged to protect civilians, uphold international law, and comply with UN Resolution 2736, with accountability demanded for serious violations. The RSF controls parts of several states, and the ongoing conflict since April 2023 has killed over 20,000 and displaced more than 14 million, with some estimates of deaths reaching 130,000.
